Why do I burn so many calories on the elliptical, but I don't feel like I'm working harder?
by Bonnie Pfiester
You may not feel like you’re working as hard because elliptical machines aren’t quite as hard on your body. Since your feet never leave the pedals, the body doesn’t have to work to lift itself off the ground, which takes a lot of energy. Also, there is less pounding on the joints, so you may not feel as much pain or fatigue compared to other workouts. The added upper body movement increases the calories you burn as well. The best measurement is to look at your heart rate monitor. Need to take things up a notch? Increase your resistance, or do speed intervals to get that “I-just-kicked-butt!” feeling.
